Richmond Meltdown Winter Ice Festival Drives Record Attendance and Economic Activity in Wayne County

Richmond, Ind. (February 17, 2026)- The Richmond Meltdown Winter Ice Festival delivered a strong boost to downtown Richmond and the broader Wayne County economy this winter, setting a new attendance record and reinforcing the community’s growing reputation as a destination for year-round events and small-business vitality. The weekend served as a powerful reminder of what’s possible when a community comes together with a shared vision and commitment to place.

An estimated 3,700 people attended the festival from January 29 through February 1, making the highest turnout in the event’s history. The increase reflects continued momentum for the festival, which has consistently attracted thousands of visitors each year. Attendance data, collected through Placer.ai foot-traffic analytics and reported by the Wayne County Convention & Tourism Bureau, shows visitors traveling from across Indiana and neighboring states, with some attendees coming from as far as Kentucky and North Carolina.

The three-day event generated meaningful economic activity for downtown businesses, restaurants, and hospitality operators. Following a major snowstorm earlier in the week that temporarily disrupted commerce, the festival played a key role in reactivating Main Street and driving renewed consumer spending throughout the Historic Depot District.

Local eateries and retailers ranked among the most-visited destinations during the festival weekend, including La Petite Bakery, Firehouse BBQ, and Ullery’s Ice Cream, emphasizing the event’s direct impact on small business performance.

“Meltdown continues to be a significant economic driver for our city,” said Tammy Ullery, Owner of Ullery’s Ice Cream. “Seeing Main Street and the Depot District full again truly meant so much. After the snowstorm forced so many of us to close our doors, watching families walk the sidewalks, hearing the laughter, and feeling that energy return reminded me why we do what we do. It was more than just business. It was a reminder of how deeply this community supports one another.”

The Richmond Meltdown Winter Ice Festival featured live music, ice carving demonstrations, and family-friendly activities, including the popular Ullery’s Ice Cream Eating Contest. Together, these elements helped position Richmond as a place where community, culture, and commerce intersect.

“Welcoming 3,700 visitors to our city reflects the strength of collaboration in Wayne County,” said Roxie Deer, Event Committee Co-chair. “Meltdown showcases the dedication of our local businesses, volunteers, and partners who believe in investing in our city and bringing people together. The impact reaches far beyond a single weekend. When we work together, we build lasting momentum that strengthens Richmond year-round. We are grateful to every committee member and volunteer who helps make this event possible in the heart of our city.”

According to Angel Gray, Communications and Operations Manager for the Wayne County Convention & Tourism Bureau, the festival’s growth aligns with broader tourism and economic development goals for the region.

“Events like the Richmond Meltdown Winter Ice Festival are so much more than a single weekend, they are a catalyst for local tourism and meaningful economic impact across Wayne County. Our mission at the Wayne County Convention & Tourism Bureau is to strategically attract visitors from outside our market and encourage them to spend their dollars here, in our shops, our restaurants, and our hotels. What we often don’t realize is that today’s visitor could be tomorrow’s resident, entrepreneur, or business investor. Through tools like Placer.ai, we’re able to analyze travel patterns and consumer trends in real time, allowing us to proactively shift our marketing efforts to meet demand and maximize opportunity. At the heart of it all, this work is about strengthening our communities, supporting our small businesses, and building long-term momentum for Wayne County.”

With record attendance and expanding regional reach, the Richmond Meltdown Winter Ice Festival continues to demonstrate how community-driven events can fuel downtown activity, strengthen small businesses, and contribute to Wayne County’s economic momentum.
