The benefits of being designated a Stellar Community are enormous. What an opportunity for Richmond to be able to fast track many important projects that would strengthen the central business district and provide corridors for connection to other areas, not only visible within the city of Richmond, but throughout the county and region as well. From my perspective, here are just a few ways I see a Stellar Community designation impacting economic development.

When company representatives and site selectors tour the city as part of their site selection process, the economic vitality of our central business district is often viewed as an indicator of the health and wellness of the entire county. The more occupied storefronts, activity and people in this area, the more vibrant and economically healthy we appear to be. With the Stellar Community designation, the projects listed in the city’s proposal will only continue to strengthen the downtown area and enhance quality of life. This is important because a great quality of life is not only attractive to outsiders who are considering making a new investment here, but also existing businesses who are considering an expansion here.

Another area we could see a benefit is in reducing our local brain drain. We are always looking for creative ways to retain our college graduates from Earlham, IU East, Ivy Tech and Purdue College of Technology.
